Substitute (on-Call) Teacher Assistant– Educational Services

Part-time, Non Exempt Position
Location: New York, NY (on-site)

Position Overview:

Broadway Housing Communities is seeking reliable, flexible, and nurturing Part-Time On-Call Substitute Teachers to provide classroom coverage on an as-needed basis in our preschool program. Our school follows an art-based, Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum that encourages creativity, exploration, and meaningful learning experiences. The Part-Time On-Call Substitute Teacher is responsible for maintaining a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment while implementing classroom routines and lesson plans in the absence of the regular teacher. This position may work with children ages 2–5 years old and collaborate with teaching teams to ensure continuity of care and instruction. The Substitute Teacher is expected to follow all BHC policies and procedures, Head Start Performance Standards, NYC Department of Education regulations, Article 47, and other applicable licensing requirements while fostering positive relationships with children, families, and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom coverage for teachers and assistant teachers as assigned.

  • Maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive classroom environment.

  • Implement lesson plans and daily routines prepared by the classroom teaching team.

  • Supervise children during classroom activities, meals, playground time, and transitions.

  • Support children’s social-emotional, cognitive, language, and physical development through developmentally appropriate interactions.

  • Assist children with personal care routines, including handwashing, toileting, dressing, and meal support as needed.

  • Promote positive behavior using respectful and responsive classroom management strategies.

  • Communicate effectively with classroom staff and administration regarding classroom needs and any concerns.

  • Ensure the classroom remains clean, organized, and safe throughout the day.

  • Follow all health, safety, sanitation, and emergency procedures.

  • Complete required documentation when requested.

  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities, as required.

  • Work alongside the Assistant Teacher to maintain the classroom environment.

Qualifications & Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field preferred.

  • Previous experience working with young children in an early childhood setting preferred.

  • Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.

  • Ability to adapt quickly to different classrooms and teaching teams.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Dependable, flexible, and punctual.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

  • CPR and First Aid Certification preferred.

  • NYC Food Handler’s Certification preferred.

Schedule

  • Part-time, on-call position.

  • Hours are based on program needs and staff absences.

  • Availability Monday through Friday during preschool operating hours is preferred.
