After-School Teacher Assistant - Educational Services

Part-time, Non-Exempt Position
Location: New York, NY (on-site)

Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate after-school teacher assistant for our art-based and Reggio-inspired Early Childhood Programs. This is an after-school program, committed to providing individualized, comprehensive educational services for children ages 2.9 to 5 years old and their families in West Harlem. The teacher manages a classroom in accordance with Head Start and Dept. of Education and Dept. of Health Performance Standards and Regulations, Board of Directors, Policy Council, and Broadway Housing Communities policies and procedures.

The teacher assistant also supports the classroom teacher and students in implementing high quality and developmentally appropriate practice. This also includes planning and supervising a warm, nurturing developmentally appropriate environment for the development of the whole child while practicing a high level of care and educational standards. Teacher assistant must develop positive relationships with colleagues through professional and respectful communication and collaboration, proactively work to resolve issues and concerns with the lead teacher, while assuming a fair share of responsibility in the classroom. Employee must partner and communicate effectively with all families, staff, partners and vendors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Document student progress through work samples, observations and Teaching Strategies Gold Assessments.

  • Participate in mandatory planning, staff meetings and Professional Development.

  • Ensures implementation of Broadway Housing Communities philosophy and foundational beliefs in all educational practices e.g. Reggio-based curriculum, inclusive and anti-bias education, and instructional practices.

  • Supports roll out of Education and Development initiatives in program.

  • Uses education quality tools (e.g. Work samples, small group notes, and child observations), to assess program and curriculum implementation.

  • Supports and identifies interventions for behavior challenges.

  • Serve as a role-model for all teachers.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Compensation based on NYC (Article 47) Preschool requirements for qualified or “study plan eligible” employees.

  • (i) Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or a State-awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements for a CDA credential OR

  • (ii) Enrolled in a program that will lead to an associate or baccalaureate degree or, are enrolled in a CDA credential program to be completed within two years of the time of hire.

  • (iii) Level 2 Teaching Assistant certificate (only if determined after review if it meets or exceeds CDA requirements).

  • (iv) Need to either have early childhood education credits plus experience equivalent to a CDA or an associate degree. Or otherwise enroll in a CDA program or an Early Childhood Associate Degree program.

  • (v) At least one year of preschool classroom experience is preferred.
