Dorothy Day Apartments is Broadway Housing Communities' sixth
supportive housing project. Officially opened in February
2003, this ground breaking initiative of permanent supportive
housing for children and families in the greatest need provides:
- 70 apartments housing approximately 190 children and
family members
- Licensed childcare center for 51 resident and neighborhood
children offering a full-day federally funded Head Start
Program
- Infant & Toddler Program emphasizing parental participation and literacy
- After School, Technology and Cultural Arts Programs for school-aged resident and
community youth, including an academic and community service
program for adolescents
- On-site comprehensive employment and social service programs
for residents
The
total renovation of this glorious turn of the century building
with river views was completed at a cost of $17 million with
funds from private equity, philanthropic foundations and all
levels of government.
The building was acquired by Broadway Housing Communities
with a gift from an anonymous benefactor in tribute to the
legacy of Dorothy Day, the founder of the Catholic Worker
Movement and renowned for her activism in advancing social
justice for workers rights, the poor and the homeless.
